Successful Season and Next Phase of Construction
As we approach the end of the 2024-2025 ice season, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all our arena user groups and patrons for their understanding and patience during this year’s renewal efforts at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre.
The first phase of the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre Renewal Project has been successfully completed, made possible through the dedication, hard work, and coordination of staff and project partners. Their efforts ensured that portions of the facility remained open, allowing the community to continue enjoying public spaces and arena amenities during major construction.
Facility Closure – April – September 2025
The facility will close from April 1 until September for the next phase of construction. This phase will focus on the installation of the refrigeration equipment in the arena mechanical room and includes a new arena concrete slab, refrigeration piping, arena boards, and glass for the rink.
In addition to the works within the arena, progress on the brand-new aquatic facility continues as seen by the recent erection of the steel framing for the building. Works this summer will continue with the enclosure of the new aquatic facility and construction of the pool basin inside the new facility.
The project team remains committed to keeping the public informed as construction progresses.
Aquatic Facility Opening – Targeted for the Third Quarter of 2026
While significant progress has been made, the project has faced challenges typical of reconstruction of a 50- year-old building. Additionally, this winter was harsher and more unpredictable compared to recent winter climates which also impacted construction schedules. As a result, the anticipated opening of the new aquatic facility is now targeted for the third quarter of 2026.
In the coming months, a community fundraising campaign will be launched, providing more opportunities for the community to get involved and show their support for this transformative project. Funding committed to the project from other grants and programs represents 53% of costs, leaving 47% of the project to be funded by Township sources including taxes, development charges, and debt.
Swimming Lessons – Offered at BGC South East and YMCA
We look forward to welcoming the community back in September for the 2025-2026 ice season and are excited to unveil the new aquatic facility in the third quarter of 2026.
We have worked with our partners at BGC South East and YMCA Wright Crescent Branch to offer swimming lessons while the aquatics facility is under construction. Lessons will continue to be provided until construction is complete. Visit loyalist.ca/swimming for details.
Temporary Customer Service Office – April – September 2025
When the Recreation Centre closes for this next phase of construction, a temporary customer service location will be available on-site to ensure that residents can access essential municipal services, including bag tags, dog licences, recreation registration, etc.
Library Remains Open
The Amherstview branch of the Lennox & Addington County Library will remain open to library patrons during construction.
